Abstract

This paper discusses legal rules authorizing treatment of anorexic patients who refuse medical care. The author proposes that the risks of forcible interventions, together with societal values protecting individual choice, justify invoking legal mechanisms only when the anorexic patient'ss life and health are seriously endangered or when the patient demonstrates incapacity to understand important facts about the condition and its treatment. The paper also analyzes special issues concerning parental consent on behalf of minor anorexic patients.
