Abstract
In rural school settings mental health professionals encounter a range of legal and ethical dilemmas. Some of these include having to manage multiple role relationships, practice within one’s competence while also attempting to meet the myriad needs of students, and maintain privacy and confidentiality in a close-knit community. Additionally, rural school mental health professionals must be knowledgeable of laws that impact rural school mental health. Some of these laws purport to expand service access and coverage and others govern school-based service delivery to remediate deficits, disabilities, and other unmet needs. Consistent with the aim of helping rural school mental health professionals expand the scope of their practice, this chapter first discusses ways to overcome barriers of rural school mental health. Secondly, legal and ethical dilemmas that commonly are experienced in rural school settings are reviewed. Lastly, situations in which laws and ethical principles occasionally conflict are discussed.
