Abstract

In 1993, the United Nations Security Council, in response to the atrocities that engulfed the former Yugoslavia, decided to create the world's first truly international criminal court – the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). This was a great experiment in accountability and a truly visionary step by the Security Council. This article will discuss some of the rules and policies applicable to legal aid and defence support at the ICTY as well as their evolution and the challenges encountered along the way.
