Abstract

Purpose: Patellar dislocations mainly occur during sporting activities in young active adults and adolescents. Treatment is either surgical or non-surgical but uncertainty remains over the most effective treatment strategy. Current treatment outcomes are poor and include reduced activity levels, later surgery, and high rates of redislocation. Leg strengthening exercises are routinely used during rehabilitation but it is unclear if muscle strength is restored after this injury. This review aimed to determine what leg muscles undergo strength assessment after patellar dislocation and to compare leg strength outcomes between patients treated surgically with those treated non-surgically.
