Abstract

Purpose: Many cardiac diseases progress to chronic heart failure. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly being used to treat these conditions. Although LVAD therapy is mainly used as a bridge to transplantation or destination therapy, it can be use in selected cases as a bridge to recovery. In these cases, explant surgery is needed. Several explantation methods have been reported using different surgical access and degrees of retained device material. This study described experience with a Heartmate III explantation via an anterior thoracotomy in a 47-year-old lady, 7 months after implantation due to heart failure following mitral valve repair surgery requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.
