Abstract

I am one of the many thousands of nurses with a work-related back injury gained through lifting. This has made me unable to work since 1985. I have high level, persistent pain aggravated by sitting, standing still and bending. I have a tiny NHS pension and was reliant on income support for 12 years. Last year I was told by the DSS that my income came to 12 pence over the threshold for income support and that they would cease paying it. Therefore, I now have to find an additional £67 a month for council tax, up to £19 in prescription costs, plus dental charges. The NHS never wants to know. The RPFN and the charity RUKBA do assist with allowances and I am grateful.
