Abstract
SINCE its initial clinical recognition by cineangiography in 1951,1several cases of left atrial myxoma have been reported, and echocardiography has rapidly established itself as a reliable, relatively inexpensive, and safe noninvasive technique for the diagnosis of left atrial tumors. We treated a patient with atrial fibrillation, no heart murmurs, and recurrent syncope in whom the diagnosis of left atrial tumor and an accurate estimate of its size were made by echocardiography. The diagnosis was confirmed by cineangiocardiography, and subsequent surgical excision of the myxoma was accomplished. Report of a Case A 68-year-old man was admitted to Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital for prostatectomy. Cardiology consultation was sought because of recent onset of atrial fibrillation and a 15-year history of recurrent syncope (one to five per month), the first episode of which followed an accidental head injury. These syncopal episodes were not associated with convulsions or any signs or symptoms
