Abstract

Liquid crystal displays have two shortcomings of low CR and power efficiency.Dynamic dimming can help LCD to achieve high contrast ratio and reduce power consumption. The evaluation method balancing display effects after dimming and power-saving ratio can efficiently reduce the development risk.Until now there is no agreed evaluation method.Combining three parameters of peak signal-to-noise ratio, structural similarity index measurement, and mutual information, the display effect index is proposed to evaluate the display effect after dimming. The dimming effect index is then introduced to balance the power-saving and display effect. The images belonging to six classifications of different luminance and contrast ratio are used to make the evaluation on several mainstream dimming algorithms.Based on the dimming effect index, the most suitable applications of the dimmingalgorithms are analyzed.
