Abstract

The role of the LED (Light Emitting Diode) Bulb as an energy saving lamp is no doubt. How to evaluate the bulb LED in the market which is still confusing for most of Indonesian costumer, most people thought that if wattage is high mean brighter. This is a wrong understanding need to be improved. This condition misleads by lamp sellers (producers) who do not explain clearly the criteria for selecting / purchasing a LED. Aside government/regulator is not really involved to socialize how to select the LED lamp. There is contradiction need to be improved since LED lamp is to save energy, but other side LED maker is selling in the wrong direction. We found that LED maker is producing LED lamp based on wattage and did not mention lumen per watt. Even though the light level is determined on the size of the flux (lumen), it is not the amount of electricity consumed (watts). The method in this research by observation in the market and using simulation tools which has been done to prove that higher wattage is not always best efficacy, vice versa with lower wattage but higher luminous efficacy is better. The results from this study can be proven that lamp with lower wattage but higher lumen is best due to with small watt can produce higher lumen so that the idea of saving energy of LED can be realized. In view of other countries, lamp nameplate in the packaging has begun to be applied by mentioning lumen per watt. As conclusion Lumen per watt is indicated instead of wattage. Thus, consumers can be smarter to choose an LED lamp.
