Abstract

Book Review : Tunisia. The Crime of the City Political scientist and painter, Sadri Khiari is a member of the National Council for Liberties in Tunisia (NCLT) and RAID (Attac/Tunisia). He has written a book whose principal thesis is that the defeat of the people’s movement led to the integration of Tunisia into the global economy, which had for an immediate effect the economic, social and political decomposition of the country. This defeat also left the field free for the Islamist opposition, whose progress has hindered the rise of a democratic opposition, which is divided on the relationship to take with the Islamists. The author attempts to prove this thesis with the help of a rigorous and pertinent analysis of the political situation in Tunisia showing the continuity, as well as the differences, between the Bourguiba and Ben Ali regimes.
