Abstract

Tensions are growing in Lebanon ahead of the issuance of indictments, expected later this year, in the February 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister. On 27 October, two investigators working for the United Nations-mandated Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) were attacked by a group of women affiliated with Hizbullah while searching the records of a clinic located in the Hizbullah stronghold of Dahiyah, in the southern suburbs of Beirut. This incident and other significant difficulties met by the STL prompted the UN Security Council to meet on 5 November and reiterate its support for the tribunal.
