Abstract

England’s recent maternity review, Better births, recommended ‘continuity of midwife carer’ for inclusion into its provider choices for the childbearing continuum. Midwives may work this model, which is held for its excellence in achieving good all-round outcomes for mothers and babies; physically, mentally and emotionally. Some mothers, unable to have their needs met, have resorted to freebirthing. Lately, more black and minority ethnic (BME) women appear to be making this choice. Given the continued rise in the poorer outcomes for mothers and babies from BME communities, the time is now right for each woman in these communities to be listened to and suitably served during the childbearing year. Embracing the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals (UN 2015) calls to action the relevant agencies in England to implement care which is culturally safe. We must endeavour to meet their needs and values, so that none of these mothers and babies are ‘left behind’.
