Abstract

Multicarrier Wavelet Packet Modulation OFDM (WPM-OFDM) signals have been recently introduced to achieve high range resolution in radar systems. These signals have important properties such as favorable ambiguity function, high bandwidth efficiency, and possibility of use in dual mode radar/communication systems. But there is no a systematic approach for designing WPM-OFDM signals for radar applications. This paper deals with designing a WPM-OFDM radar signal under a criterion of the minimization of least-square error between designed and desired ambiguity functions (AF). The thumbtack shape is assumed to be the desirable shape of the AF. In following, an iterative algorithm for the allocation of a proper phase to the desired AF is introduced to obtain better results. It is shown that this algorithm can reduce sidelobes, throughout the entire ambiguity function and leads to a favorable signal for radar application.
