Abstract

Focusing on the instrumental ensemble genre of nanguan, as played in contemporary Taiwan, I first discuss the experiences of ten musicians in entering this tradition to show changes in the learning environment over the past three generations. Second, I examine how beginners study singing prior to the acquisition of instrumental experience, looking also at the roles of memorization, enculturation and socialization. Meanwhile, in order to balance generalization and individuality, I use my personal experience as a case study to illustrate how learning processes develop from the day‐to‐day interactions of musicians.
