Abstract

Health care is delivered by people, who inevitably make mistakes. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (2002) emphasizes that nurses are accountable for their practice, which includes recognizing errors and taking appropriate action afterwards. Nurses also have a duty of care which includes a responsibility to act in a client’s best interests when the actions of others may compromise a client’s wellbeing. The Bristol Children’s Hospital and Dr Shipman inquiries both illustrated that every practitioner has a part to play, even if it is only to draw attention to deviations from the expected norms of health-care contact.
