Abstract
Despite successes all over the world in eliminating and eradicating Polio except few regions of World Health Organization(WHO), it was seemingly considered impossible to eradicate it from the Indian subcontinent which was representative of two regions of WHO namely South East Asia and East Mediterranean due to varied reasons. Although experts were more concerned about India due to its diverse climatic conditions, erratic terrain, different cultures, deep rooted notions, poor sanitation, low standard of living conditions, huge genetic biodiversity and a host of unexplained factors which were considered as the major hindrances in eradication initiatives. But due to strong political will, apt planning, stewardship approach and many timely programmatic strategies led to attainment of the monumental feat of Polio eradication in India. Many success stories will be written on the grand achievement of India in eradicating poliomyelitis.
