Abstract

Safe laparoscopy requires the acquistion of skills prior to taking part in operative procedures. Barriers to learning consist of access to equipment and the necessity for a camara operator with many training boxes. Virtual reality systems lack real world applicicability and are prohibitively expensive. The presentation outlines the laparoscopy course in Dublin's National Clinical Skills Centre. This course is delivered by senior surgeons to trainees of all levels and begins with basic orientation and ergonomic exercises culminating in more advanced skills such as suturing.
