Abstract

Imaginary rotation of patterns of five filled cells in a 3 x 3 grid was investigated. Accuracy was found to drop off markedly with degree of rotation, but it improved with practice. Symmetry of pattern was a significant variable. Transfer of training to different patterns was substantial, and it was concluded that subjects were learning to rotate, as distinct from memorizing patterns. Imagining was discussed as a skill.
