Abstract

In this article, Squiers et al1 bring together two different ideas to help address the salient clinical problem of successful amputation wound healing. In this pilot study looking at the use of multispectral imaging (MSI) in predicting wound healing, the authors have introduced machine learning (ML) to develop an ideal prediction algorithm. Hidden underneath these ideas are the clinical factors surgeons knowingly or unknowingly use to determine when and where to amputate. I suggest that the readers interpret these findings while keeping in mind that the ultimate goal of a successful amputation is not just healing, but maintaining functionality of the longest residual limb possible.
