Learning environment for medical professionalism

Abstract

Abstract Introduction The students' interplay with the learning environment is sophisticated, but an important part of that is the professional behavior of faculty they model before students on daily basis. This powerful effect of faculty professional behaviors on students' professional behavior is a huge potential for developing learning and evaluating of professionalism in medical schools. This study aimed at measuring medical students' and their faculty perceived professional behaviors. Methods UMKC-SOM Climate of Professionalism survey was used. The intern doctors asked to quantify the frequency of certain perceived behaviors of their faculty and colleagues toward their colleagues, patients and work. Results There were positive correlations between faculty and colleagues professional behaviors, no significant difference in perceived behaviors between the two sexes, medical schools and student verses teachers. Conclusions Learned professional behaviors are positively correlated with those of the faculty which confirms the powerful effect of faculty professionalism on their students' professional formation.
