Abstract

The need to teach students how to critically read the literature is increasingly recognized in medical education. However, few faculty are themselves adept at this skill, and fewer are adept at teaching it. This article describes the use by general pediatric faculty of a journal club format to learn these skills. At the end of the 1‐year program, faculty were more comfortable with practicing and teaching critical appraisal. In addition, we found improved communication and increased consistency of clinical management and teaching among the faculty group. The journal club format is a useful approach to learning critical appraisal at the faculty level, with benefits beyond learning a new skill.
