Abstract
The privilege of working with Lawrence E. Young begins with mutual interests in hemolytic anemias and extends for 30 years of cooperative research, the joint semiannual meetings of the "Spleen Axis" (Rochester to Cleveland, Cleveland to Rochester) from 1955 to 1968, a joint participation in teaching beginning in 1961, and development of the American Society of Hematology as a "nonsmug" organization for research, for teaching, and for encouragement of young men and women since 1954. The "rule for straight thinking" was discovered by the Spleen Axis, whose members were admitted immediately by participating and were designated "president" at all times. No one was allowed to stay in a hotel so that families were hosts. Examples of these interurban, interdisciplinary, interpersonal, interuniversity research and teaching activities will be outlined with Larry Young serving as the propositus of this happy academic syndrome.
