Abstract

Abstract Gazdar, Klein, Pullum, and Sag (1985) made it very clear in the introductory chapter of their book on Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar that what they were about to present was a linguistic theory, not a psychological theory of language use or language learning. They were prepared to acknowledge that some relationship between the two might be forged: “since a given linguistic theory will make specific claims about the nature of languages, it may well in turn suggest specific kinds of psycholinguistic hypotheses.” But their estimate of actual progress to date in identifying and testing such hypotheses was quite glum.
