Abstract

Today's colleges and universities face numerous challenges, including declining enrollment, increased expenses and operational costs, reduced funding, and social media and political pressures. Revenue difficulties rank as the most common reason for an institution to consider closure, but other possible paths exist. Although institutional leaders should always consider growth and strategic partnerships, they can also consider merging with institutions that have similar missions and goals because such mergers could lead to expanded educational offerings and opportunities without substantially increasing costs.
