Abstract

This case won first place in the supply chain category of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) case awards in 2011. It was produced as part of a research partnership among the learning platform of IMD’s Global Center for Sustainability Leadership, Unilever, the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform, and the Sustainable Trade Initiative. The case illustrates how Unilever identified challenges in its supply chain to make it sustainable. The central issue in the discussion is how to translate the three pillars of sustainable development into concrete actions at the operational level with the support of the top management.
