Abstract

We developed an enrichment program to introduce Duke rising sophomores interested in science to the field of pharmacology. LEAP included a summer 2‐week mini‐course in pharmacology followed by a fall research experience. In the past 3 years we have had 227 students in the summer course; 87 of them took the Fall research course. The summer course met from 9‐4 daily, covering basic principles of pharmacology the first week and focusing on the pharmacotherapy of 4 diseases the second week. The teaching included a variety of methodologies (lecture, small group inquiry‐based learning, discussions, and creative group work). Students worked on a hypothetical research proposal of their own choice during the 2 weeks and presented their plan at a poster session. In the Fall, students proposed a research project on a pharmacologic topic of interest, and with the guidance of graduate student or postdoc mentors, pursued their own research plan, including planning the experiments, ordering reagents, carrying out the research, and analyzing the data. At the end of the semester, all students gave an oral presentation of their work. We hope that introducing pharmacology to students early in their college experience will foster an interest in this field for future graduate study. Funding: NIH GM090534.
