Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution is heralded, and industrial manufacturing is preparing for transformations linked to Industry 4.0. The organization, largely based on Lean manufacturing concepts, must reflect upon the main issues for its managers. After a review of Lean manufacturing and industry 4.0 literature, the article will consider three points that are fundamental for ensuring the transition in Europe: the sharing of knowledge, the development of skills and the management of progress. Around these three themes, a reflection on technological challenges will lead to methodological or managerial solutions to the challenge of digitization, taking into account the drawbacks of the previous industrial revolution and the generational transition in progress.
