Abstract

A novel way to realize beam steering leaky-wave antenna (LWA) for fixed-frequency based on substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) is proposed in this paper. The design principal is to control the main beam direction by changing the slot period. The leaky wave antenna consists of two parts: a basic SIW with straight slot in top wall and a larger metal cover with inclined slots. The slots in the metal cover are arranged symmetrically, and the inclined angle of each slot decreases from the middle to both sides. When the metal cover and SIW have a relative motion, the slot period of the LWA changes gradually, realizing a continuous beam scanning. Simulation results show that the antenna can achieve a beam scanning range of 56 degree in the backward side at 16 GHZ.
