Abstract

A simple model of the energy flows about a leaf yields new expressions for the temperature, external diffusion resistance, internal diffusion resistance, and the transpiration rate. The effects are considered of either (i) coating the leaf to make its surface impermeable to water vapour, or (ii) wetting the leaf surface, or (iii) shading it. As a result, four methods of deriving a leaf's external resistance and four for determining the transpiration rate have been deduced, and compared using data from field measurements on intact vine leaves. The results obtained by the various methods are roughly similar, but anomalies need further investigation.
