Abstract

Leaf area (LA) in capsicum ( Capsicum annuum L.) can be estimated in situ, either by the ratio estimator (LA = 0.604 × LB (cm 2); R 2 = 98%) (assuming that the Y-intercept is equal to zero and has little effect on the coefficient of determination ( R 2)), or by the regression estimator (LA = −0.68 + 0.63 (LB); R 2 = 98%). However, when large numbers of samples are to be handled, LA can be estimated on the basis of dry weight in mg (DW) with reasonable accuracy (LA = 4.33 + 0.11 (DW); R 2 = 88%; LA = 0.15 × DW; R 2 = 88%). This estimator was used to compare the total LA, crop growth rates ( CGR) and net assimilation rates ( NAR) in the capsicum cultivars (‘California Wonder’, ‘Arka Basant’ and ‘Arka Mohini’) grown under the agro-climatic conditions of Ranchi.
