Abstract

The leaf-mining guild associated with water oak, Quercus nigra, causes premature abscission of leaves. Abscission usually occurs after miners have successfully emerged or have succumbed to another source of mortality. Leaf fall in this system is not, therefore, a major source of mortality. This study and others suggest that premature leaf fall is the result of physical damage to leaves and is not likely to be an induced defense by the host plant to regulate a specific pest population.
