Abstract

We discuss the key goal of conducting research which is to create new knowledge. We suggest that this endeavor can be frustrating yet fascinating due to the many ambiguities, uncertainties and eureka moments that can arise while on the path of seeking knowledge. We consider ways in which individuals and institutions can better prepare themselves for a fulfilling and productive career as researchers and research facilitators respectively. We discuss one approach to the valuation of knowledge based on principles from finance and the implications it has for research policy in all fields and the design of systems that can enhance the overall creation and dissemination of knowledge. We conclude with a warning about not taking the knowledge we have accumulated too seriously and to be vigilant towards any unintended consequences that can arise when we implement solutions to the problems we face based on the knowledge we have discovered.
