Abstract

Staff grade and associate specialist (SAS) doctors comprise differing proportions of a trust's workforce depending on specialty and are involved in the delivery of service and teaching. SAS surgeons will at times be the lead surgeon in the theatre and as such will need to display leadership qualities as part of the theatre team. For this reason in late 2008 the London Deanery commissioned the Royal College of Surgeons to provide a programme to develop the leadership skills for SAS surgeons within the deanery.
