Abstract

Craig M. Watson is Financial Direc tor of Business Projects and Planning for the international division of Merck & Co., Inc. He was formerly international strategic planning director for Cummins Engine Company. A comparison of traditional organization theory with the 7-S model highlights key differences between managers and leaders. The distinction may lie in purposeful use of the soft tools of style, staff, skills, and shared goals.
