Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of organizational leaders in flexible work systems. Flexible work structures for individuals at all levels of the organization enable their ability to live healthier work, personal, and family lives. The chapter enhances our understanding of two topics: how leaders can facilitate flexible work systems for others; and how leaders can take advantage of flexible work systems for themselves. It discusses why leaders serve a pivotal role in flexible work systems including the benefits for enabling such systems, and the challenges they face in doing so. The chapter explores how individuals in leadership roles themselves may take advantage of flexible work, including the unique benefits to leaders, and the challenges they may face as well. Given its prominence in research attention, and the direct benefits to well-being, the chapter suggests a few transformational leadership behaviors that leaders can enact to facilitate the successful implementation and use of a flexible work system within their organization.
