Abstract

Purpose: The academic Gastroenterology (GI) divisions play a significant role in terms of patient care, innovative research, educational activities and developing manpower for the private practice. GI divisions are facing significant challenges because of an increase in service demand, increase in uncompensated care, decrease in reimbursements etc. Because of that, there is decrease in tenured positions and faculties have to spend more time earning money through patient care, and spend less time doing basic and clinical research. As the old timers are retiring, there is significant shortage of faculties with commitment for applied bench research. We need programs and innovative ideas to attract potential leaders and make them interested in biomedical research. This process can start at the grass root level in our schools and colleges. Methods: A pilot study has been initiated to attract high school and college students to biomedical science including gastrointestinal research and innovation. This involves encouraging the students to participate in presentation on basic science topic and also involve them in clinical research at the community hospitals with major emphasis on gastrointestinal diseases. Results: The first meeting involved a series of presentations on basic immunology including protective immunity of the GI track. During the summer break the students will participate in clinical research in the community hospital involving data collection, tabulation and presentation at the hospital conference and also put up their work at regional and national meetings. Conclusion: It is expected that all these activities will generate additional interest, commitment and dedication to pursue innovative research when those students go to medical school and commit themselves towards academic medicine choosing a more modest living with the salary at academic GI facility as compared to those in private practice.
