Abstract

AbstractThe author, a technology and nonprofit executive with a military background, knew Frances Hesselbein for a decade. When he first met her, in similarity to the circumstances of many other people, she had an immediate and profound effect: “I left feeling special and with an odd sense of empowerment that I could achieve whatever goals I had set.” He later became a professional mentor for “her mentoring and development program for teens, the Hesselbein Global Academy For Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Fifth Annual Leadership Summit at the University of Pittsburgh in July of 2013.” In drawing lessons from these experiences and encounters, the author writes: “We all meet dozens of people every day. We really have no idea what struggles and challenges they might be facing. If given the chance to talk or listen to them – take a few extra moments to help them feel special.”
