Abstract

Laboratory experiments are carried out to study the mechanism of laser-induced discharge under non-uniform DC electric field as a basic research for the laser-induced lightening. Flashover voltage is measured against the position of the laser plasma. The result indicate that the laser-induced discharge occurs as the leader is formed at the rod electrode and works as an extension of the electrode. Images of leader are taken by a streak camera. The velocity and direction of leader propagation are identified. The velocity of the leader propagation is of the order of 10 3 -10 4 m/s. The discharge occurs within a time-scale longer by one order of magnitude than the time for the leader to travel the electrode gap. This time difference is explained as the time to heat the plasma channel by Joule heating to from the leader.
