Abstract

Christophe Dejours and Pascale Molinier Work as an Enigma Objections are raised against the widespread idea that work is not, on neither a scientific nor a practical level, enigmatic. Denying the enigmatic nature of work is, in fact, what best defines work today. Surveys in the psychodynamics of work and in ergonomics bring to light three basic dimensions necessary to performing work : ingenuity, cooperation and subjective mobilization. Central to self-fulfillment and social bonding, work as a concept cannot be separated from a theory of society.
