Abstract. — Taking the Rhenish example, the author points out the place which must be kept for the modernised waterway, and its vital character, in a large regional area. He also insists on the technical role in the economical future and is of the opinion that big waterways, of high capacity and readily perfectible, are more rentable than the interbasin canals which have an unequal economical range.
