Abstract

Abstract Facies of transgressive deposits in Liguria (Italy) are so uniform that former stratigraphic divisions were based on rock type boundaries which cross time boundaries. On the basis of the fauna, the earlier work is corrected and the Sannoisian is reclassified as a lagoonal facies of the lower Stampian. Other formations, attributed to Stampian and Chattian are now assigned to the Aquitanian. Further stratigraphic revision places the transgression onto the Volta group between the lower and upper Stampian, while further to the west, transgression onto the northern slopes of the Ligurian Alps did not occur until the lower Aquitanian. Extensive folding and faulting occurred in the area during the Stampian and Aquitanian.
