Abstract
The concept of small-volume resuscitation encompasses the rapid infusion of a small dose (250 ml) of 7.2 or 7.5% NaCl–colloid solution. Hypertonic saline solution is effective and safe in expanding plasma volume and enhancing cardiac output. Furthermore, hypertonic saline improves microcirculation and modulates the immunological response. These solutions have been approved and registered in European countries for acute hypovolemia. Large and controlled studies are needed to validate the use of hypertonic saline solution in the management of intracranial hypertension or in septic shock.
