Abstract

This paper proposes a metrical study on the poems of the Satyricon of Petronius. Besides the narratological functions, such as characterization and thematic construction, the Petronian poems are also capable to create a parallel romanesque universe. By the uses of multiple repetitions, verbal, phonic and rhythmical, verses are provided with a rhetorical strength to influence or develop the plot ; by metrical choice and practice, they can even reveal some hidden esthetical tendencies, especially an archaism full of stylistic success and symbolic meanings. Finally, the use of poetry can as well elevate the popular novel writing to a litterary statute which it still ignored. This was perhaps the ambition of one of the first and most ingenious Occidental novelists.
