Abstract

Robert de Torigni was a faithful supporter of the Plantagenets. He continued the Gesta Normannorum ducum started by Guillaume de Jumièges. He had received from Henry of Huntingdon a copy of the latter's Historia Anglorum, which prompted him to do the same for Normandy. And so he did from 1149 to his death in 1186, both when prior of Bec and abbot of Mont-Saint-Michel. He was visited there by Henry who donated the churches of Pontorson to his abbey. The close examination of charters in connection with his chronicle reveals an opportunistic attitude on his part, which he diplomatically concealed in his historical writings.
