Abstract

SUMMARY. — The theoretical and experimental aspects implied in Jacob and Monod's operon model of cellular regulation are historically reconstructed to elucidate the role of chance in the development of scientific theories. Chance is defined as a coincidence of mutually independent causal chains. The operon model in fact resulted from the unification of two different scientific programmes, i.e. enzymatic induction and lysogeny.
