Abstract

The Role of Engineers in French Architecture from 1 945 to 1975. Borrowed from the field of sociology, the concept of a “network” is a precious tool for architectural history. Applied to the case of engineers working in architecture in France between 1945 and 1975, it can help us understand how skills and knowledge, and technical know-how particularly, were transmitted on a national, European and international scale. Working from within the already existing networks of architects, engineers created on a national and European scale their own network of teachers, and, later, of researchers. This was the first step in their utopian attempt to coordinate research on a global, international scale.
