Abstract

A learned society composed of alienists was supposed to be established in 1848, but because of the February Revolution, the founders postponed the project until the spring of 1852 when the political and intellectual context had become quite different. This article traces the options of the alienists and their involvement in political and intellectual life in the mid-19th century in a Europe confronted by many challenges.
