Abstract
Based on Jan Assmann’s theory of cultural memory, this article deals with the question of variation in the transmission of philosophical and scientific thought. Variation and evolution of ideas depend to a large extend on the pattern of transmission of founding texts, which can be either ritual, canonical or “hypoleptical”.
