Abstract

The different techniques for processing liquid-based gynecologic cytology available in France are presented and compared. The advantages of liquid-based cytology (LBC) are listed. The specimen adequacy is improved by diminution of unsatisfactory Pap smears by removing inadequate slide preparation and poor fixation. Preparations are free of inflammatory exudate and blood. LBC is more accurate than conventional Pap smears for automated screening and potentially for reducing screening times. The residue of collected cells is available for ancillary tests such as HPV testing, easier to realise without an additional sample. Probably liquid-based technology improves detection of low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions in comparison with conventional smears but additional studies are needed to prove more consistent advantages in terms of sensitivity and specificity. Current practice and experience are necessary to interpret LBC. LBC morphology is significantly different. LBC is really more expensive in terms of equipment, consumables, technical preparation time … The authors insist how difficult it is to compare the different techniques because of rapid modifications, even the name of the methods, evolution of costs, characteristics of the techniques.
