Caldwell Country. Or Men in the Bodies of Animais. Often accused of pornography, Erskine Caldwell gives, in his works, the picture of an imaginary rural South, « Caldwell Country », peopled with men and women leading very free sexual lives, according to the publisher's blurb on the covers of paperback editions. For the majority of readers, it is a realistic description of life in a region considered as backward, which accounts for the huge success of books like Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre. Actually the representation of sex may have above all a metaphorical function.
